I have lived in the northeast all of my life and used to see them in the city all the time when I was a child. Now I haven't seen them for years and I really miss them. Has anyone seen one lately?

All the time. They're still here. Trust me.

Are you talking about bugs that make things lighter? I have never seen a lightening bug.

However, I have seen lightning bugs as recent as this evening. My son even put some in a jar for while to see how bright it could get and then let them all fly away.

I have seen them several times in the summer but always out in the country, never in the city.

They're not extinct.

I live in Los Angeles. We had two bouts of aerial spraying for "medflies" in the 1980s. Lots of native insects died and were replaced by other forms. Still, I imagine those native insects are living on, just not in the city.

They are alive and well in Kansas. Lightening bugs, a.k.a. fireflies (a regional distinction), like open stretches of grass. In the city they may not be able to find that anymore.

I asked myself that question the other day. I used to catch them when I was young, and now I have kids I wanted to do that with them, but all summer long we have only seen one, and it was on the verge of death.

We certainly have a ton of lightning bugs here in Central Ohio. My children still collect them and put them in jars and pretend they are lanterns!

I still see them in Central Texas, but not as many as when I was small. Kind of a bummer.
