Ozzie Smith. The wizard changed the way the position is played. Today's players are bigger, stronger, and much better hitters than there has ever been. But if you asked them how they learned to play the position or who they model themselves after most of them would probably say Ozzie. There have always been great fielders throughout the history of baseball but none of them played the position like Ozzie. When Ozzie first joined the majors the knock on him was that he was to small to be a major leaguer, meanwhile, all he did was make some of the most fantastic plays in baseball history. Ozzie was a web gem highlight reel before anyone new what that was. Most middle infielders today do things on the field that still emulate the wizard and that tradition will continue on forever. There are many modern middle infielders in today's game who are much better offensively but few will ever measure up to the Wizard even though they have much more natural talent than Ozzie ever did.

Honus Wagner was a great shortstop..But as to who is the greatest all around "middle infielder" that's not even close..St. Louis Cardinal second baseman Rogers Hornsby for a six year period 1920-1925 he hit over 400 three times and had a SLG% over 700 twice. His worst BA for those 6 years was 370. He won 7 NL batting titles including the 6 straight from 1920-25. Hornsby's 424 batting average in 1924 is the highest BA in the modern history of baseball..He won the "triple crown" twice,1922 and 1925.. His lifetime BA of 358 is second only to Ty Cobb...And, Hornsby was a great fielding 2B..
1922 - Triple Crown - Games Played - 154
BA-401 OB%-459 SLG-722 HR-42 R-141 RBI-152
1925 -Triple Crown - Games Played - 138
BA-403 OB%-489 SLG-756 HR-39 R-133 RBI-143
Career Numbers - BA-358 OB%-424 SLG-577 HR-301

Hands down Roger Hornsby. He won 2 mvps. Can you name somebody else in the infield that whon the triple crown. NOT ONCE BUT TWICE!!! And he whon the batting title 6 count em 6 straight times out of 7 total, and he also had over 300 home runs. This isnt even an argument. Its an easy pick for hornsby. Honus was good so was morgan but there not even close.

AROD seems to deserve consideration despite the fact that he plays 3rd now. Others might include Ozzie, Cal Ripkin, Honus Wagner and Ernie Banks

It's hard to compare one era to another, but Honus Wagner is a great pick... I'm surprised more people haven't mentioned Cal Ripken. I'd never pick him, but a lot of people thought he was great. Personally, I think he's the most overrated player in baseball history...

Honus Wagner is a great pick. I personally think A-Rod will be by the time it's all said and done. I don't think he's done playing shortstop.

I have to go with Cal Ripken Jr., personally. 2300+ straight games, 3000+ hits, 400+ home runs and a very nice glove at short.
