Time is the only thing that will resolve swelling aka edema, you can apply ice packs to reduce the likelihood of further swelling and ease discomfort. But, if you are talking about distension, caused by intenstinal gas....the best way is to get out and walk. The activity increases peristaltic motion and you will pass the gas quickly as a result.

It can take as long as 6 weeks, and should go away on it's own. I've had abdominal surgery, and was always told to do a lot of walking and drink lots of water to help relieve that bloating.
