The amount of violence as far as the United States is concerned has markedly increased since the advent of the Bush Administration. Whether it could been avoided is an open debate. The fact that we define terrorism only in terms of what the enemy does is particularly significant. It is most likely that the United States is as guilty of terrorism as Iraq although I suspect the media has been discouraged from reporting it. In my opinion, the world especially in the Middle East is approaching a complete meltdown. Should Mr. Bush have his way, we may well see another holy war against the Muslims. Another "Crusade" is very much a part of our lexicon.

Well, you are assuming that terrorism would have remained at a static, steady state otherwise, no? But that's the crux of the problem about answering this.
Nobody can say that if we didn't go into Afghanistan and Iraq that terrorism would have remained the same or decreased, or if it would have increased with the latest al Qaeda victory and show of US weakness.
So, IMO, this question is basically unanswerable. Not much of an answer, but there it is.

BEFORE we went to Afghanistan and Iraq, we were attacked, 1st world trade center bombing, Beirut-- 200+ marines killed by hezbollah, our navy ship in Yeaman, our consulates in Tanzania and Kenya bombed and of course 3000+ dead on 9/11. Do you think our policies in Afghanistan or Iraq caused these gutless acts before our invasions? NO! This is a war, we just didn't decide to participate until 9/11. Before 9/11,It seems our policy was to hope Islamic fascism would just go away, that didn't work so we'll have to DEFEAT it. Oh,by the way, in 5 years since 9/11 how many attacks have been on American soil?

It has decreased here in the USA, that is why we did it. If there is more in other parts of the world then join in the fight. We asked "who is with us" and too many said "no", this is not our fault.

Overall I would say it has stayed the same. It just gets more media attention now.
