First you want to be sure that your battery is really getting a full charge and you don't have a problem with your charger or cables. It doesn't hurt to update to the latest ipod software too.
Apple has some really good suggestions on how to get more play time from your battery here: http://www.apple.com/batteries/ipods.html
Stuff, like using pause, using playlists, turning off the backlight and equalizer...
If you find that the battery still doesn't last very long or doesn't last as long as it used to, then you might want to try testing your battery as outlined by Apple: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61475
If you find it isn't behaving properly, then you probably should look into getting a replacement battery.

I dont have an ipod, but maybe this will help since its the same thing that happened to my digital camera. you have to use electronic batteries and not just regular ones. they will say on the package what they are good for. the other batteries can ruin electronics so I would say pay the extra $ for the batteries it will save you $ because you wont have to buy the cheap ones so often and it will save your ipod too!

I'm not sure how quickly you mean, but turning off settings like sound equalizer and backlight will help save battery life.

It sounds like your battery is dying. I would replace the battery. If your ipod is till within the one year warranty, go to the store or call them to fix it. If it is out of warranty, go to an mac/ipod repair shop. The only place I know of is in CA, www.techrestore.com which is local to me. I think they do repairs all of the US, but it is best you call them.

Nope, not really. You can have the battery replaced, but you'll lose all your songs. Not really a good option unless you have them all stored on your computer.
Bite the bullet and buy a new iPod.
Sorry!

*turn the back light off.
*let it play continuously, dont keep skipping songs or rewinding, basically dont keep pressing the options in the circle.
My batter dies a bit,, then I reet it then it plays, this is because I dont skip songs or scan for other songs etc
