As long as your getting all of the updates then you should be fine. Don't worry about going to other sites to download patches. If you have a legal version of Windows and you have all of the updates your computer should be good.

windows updates are normally set to automatic by defualt,to check this go to control panel>automatic updates ,and check that it is set to automatic
windows will send you the updates you need as and when you need them, say for instance you re-install your windows xp,you will ahve around 50 updates downloaded and installed within the 1st hour so be warned
no patches are needed for updates, infact updates are actually called patches,as they "patch up" holes and errors found by the windows public and that are sent in error reports, them horrible messages that pop-up when there is a major error in the windows operating system, did you know you can disable them by going right click my computer>advanced>error reporting
dont worry about updates the ones you need will come when they are ready, dont be fooled by any messages on-line about add-ons or upgrades, microsoft will look after your p.c just fine
good luck

Let windows do it! what you have to do is enable the 'Auto Update', than go online, Microsoft will scan your Windows version and suggest update patch for you!

If you went to Microsoft to download the updates you should be alright, but if you are running windows me or 98 be wary, run spy ware I/E is very vulnerable and Microsoft no longer supports them! Good Luck!

There are lots of 'available' downloads from MS, but that doesn't mean that you have to have them. If you're set up with downloading critical patches from MS, you're probably in good shape.
