Has anyone had the Dr. break their water to induce labor? I may or may not have to have this done next week, depending on if I am at all dilated...the Dr. will explain it to me more next week if need be, but I am curious about it and would like to know how it's done and what that will feel like. Anyone had it done before?

I've had my water broken to get things moving along. They take a long plastic hook (amniohook) looks a bit like a really long plastic crochet hook and they catch a corner of the bag of waters and break it open. it doesn't feel anything worse than having your cervix checked for dilation, and it's really quick, as soon as they take thier hand out you'll feel a huge gush of warm liquid, and I mean.. it's alot and it has a unique smell to it, that's normal. by breaking your water your body gets the signal that it's time to have the baby, also you have to have the baby within 24 hrs of having this done or you risk infection, so the doctor will give you an IV of pitocin if breaking your water alone doesn't get things moving to help avoid a c-section. Congratulations on the pending birth of your baby :)

The DR had to break my water all 3 times. I didn't really notice it, but my husband said it looked kinda nasty when it all wooshed out. They just put something that looks a bit like a knitting needle up there, hook a corner of the sac, and make a small tear (at least I think that's what they did). Its not a big deal. Doctors have to do it all the time. It won't hurt the baby and it will help your body move 1 step closer to birth.

I had to have it done when I went into labor with my first 10 years ago. My Dr. had what looked like a big crochet needle and just popped the bag. It didn't hurt in the least bit. It definitely accelerated labor though. So congrats in advance on your baby!!

It doesn't hurt at all. Your doctor will insert an amniohook, which looks like this:

and gently break the membrane that holds the amniotic fluid and baby. It really speeds up labor because your baby won't be 'free floating' anymore. He'll be pressing against your cervix and helping it to dilate.

The only thing you'll feel is a gush of warm fluid coming out. It's nothing to be worried about, promise!

Good luck!!!

Giant crochet hook, no pain, and most women have had their water broken by the doctor..be ready for contractions though because you could just suddenly start like I did without any easy ones just super hard strong break you in half ones..or you could slowly build like i did with my son, i wish you the very best and don't worry about getting your water broken they take the big hook thingy and just pop your bag of water and it comes out, but it will continue through labor with your contractions and you will constantly feel like you are peeing the bed, but the nurses change the pads so you don't have to just lay there all wet...

The doctor normally does this to move labor along. My doctor broke mine, and immediatly the contractions and pain increased tenfold. The insert a hook like plastic stick that catches the bag amniotic sac and then tears it so it ruptures. It doesnt hurt besides a pulling slightly cramping sensation but be prepared for a whole lotta hurtin when your contractions pick up. Good Luck.

I had 1 of my pregnancies induced due to pre-enclamsia and a previous history of it. All they did was give me a drug to bring on labor. I got the needle at 8 pm and baby came 4 am.

It doesn't hurt. HOWEVER, once the water is gone and labor begins, the labor pains will be very strong, since there will be no cushion between you and the baby. Be prepared to ask for drugs immediately!

The doctor had to break my water.

it didn't hurt. I thought it would and it didn't. He just used a crochet hook looking thing and broke it and there was a gush of water.

That is it. I thought it was going to be a 100 times worse than what it actually was.
