Being yourself would fit more or less into one of either categories. Which of the two would it fit more?

Thinking on it, I agree with everyone who stated that you should be an individual. If it is in your individual personality to try to be one of these things or the other then I believe you should go after it. Either way it's still being an individual, because it was your choice to do. Good answers, I'll let the masses vote to see whose was best.

If I understand your question correctly, then none of the other answerers understood it. I think some of them analyzed it incorrectly. Or maybe I did... Let me know if I misunderstood your question. I applied this situation to my personal life:
I was raised in a very conservative religion. I used to be full of spiritual devotion and purity, until I left that religion when I became an adult. I guess you can say I became more societal than spiritual. Being a part of that religion was like living a whole different life, separate from society. While in this religion you are a part of society, but separate because you have different moral values and lifestyle. Maybe not all religions are like this. It was like being part of a cult- total devotion without question, etc. It was like living in a fog. And I didn't realize it until I got out of it.
You ask some very interesting questions, by the way.
So, to finally answer your question, keeping in mind my own personal experiences, I would have to say that I would rather be of society than be full of spiritual devotion and purity. I have lived both lifestyles and infinitely prefer the FREEDOM and "reality" of society.

I would like to be spiritual but I am a Martha not a Mary. I have tried to be a Mary but failed each time so Martha I will be and serve in that capacity.

You seem to imply that spirituality requires antisocial behaviour and attitudes, and that socializing requires antispiritual behaviour and attitudes. But I suspect that neither is necessarily the case - it is quite possible to be VERY spiritual and VERY social. Of course, I'm sure there are religions as well as societies which DO require such things... but speaking for myself, I try to avoid such exclusionary practices.

I'd rather be myself and an individual....that's what makes ppl interesting. If you go with society your a boring brain washed drone if you go with spiritual your a boring brain washed drone.
I don't like those odds...so i'm just myself....i don't conform for anyone...well unless they pay my bills meaning my employer...that's the only time I conform...because it behooves me too.

Neither. While each may have different tenets, the structure is the same. So to me your choices are the same.
