Types of Weathering

Chemical
Minerals making up a rock are chemically altered. They either transform to other minerals or dissolve.

Physical/Mechanical
Rocks are fragmented through generally inorganic mechanisms, while the chemical composition of the rocks' minerals does not change.

Biological
Living organisms can accelerate either of the previous two

Keep in mind that you really can't separate physical from chemical or biological weathering, because all three proceed at the same time

Do you mean "differential" weathering?

Differential weathering is where weaker areas of a formation weather out (erode) before other areas, even though they are exposed to the same weathering processes. It can cause pits and holes to appear or sinuous raised ridges parallel to bedding.
