Today automatic transmission vehicle don't coast anymore. Transmission downshift automatically to stay close to speed vehicle is traveling. It is more efficient to have right transmission gear matching speed of vehicle traveling.

for example, if you rode you bicycle up a big hill then without touching gear shifter and rode down a hill or vice verse...bicycle and you will be not so efficient.
