Dont forget the 7 Day Adventist' big bust in 1912, the 'scourge of god' devastation by Attila the Hun, the Black Death in medieval times, every end of the millenia & century, Mayan calander 2012, mid-east conflicts, when Nero was throwing Christians to the lions in the Colisseum, Jim Jones cult massacre, etc, etc.,
You're right!! history is replete with the doomsayers, and it never ends. The simple answer is that we're 'wired' to think in 'end of world' terms.
I read about some interesting studies of the temporal lobe regions that are 'mis-firing' or giving off 'unbalanced' neuroligical signals. Some of the studies are intrigueing, they can duplicate 'religious experiences' in blind tests of humans.
It was already known that the more primitive limbic system of our brains contain the raw emotion where our religious beliefs spring forth. The development of the cerebral cortex (or the thinking and rational part of the brain) is only a recent development in humans, say the last 40,000 years.

You are so right! What this does actually "teach" us about people and their nature, though, is that however much more "advanced" or educated we think we are than people 100 or 1000 or 2000 years ago, we really haven't changed that much socially. While there are certainly signs of physical evolution within mankind over the past two millenia, and we "own more knowledge", we don't seem to be getting any smarter!
(BTW, I have it on good authority from my "born-again" neighbors that THIS TIME is different, and we really are near the end. LOL)

This is because there are arrogant religious people in the world who think they KNOW when Christ will return. They study Revelations and think they understand the prophecies to mean the world will end at a certain time. It is just arrogance.

It's a way religions control their believers. If the end is nigh, then you need to shape up and do what the church tells you to do or the consequence is hellfire. (And BTW, you won't be needing your money any more, so give it to the church!) It is just manipulation, and it works so well that it gets used over and over.

It is the human being's egotism that makes them do this. They cannot imagine the world without 'them'.

Because humanity is driven by fear and for that reason, it tends to cling to fear.
