I recently graduated from nursing school and took the state boards. I failed the first time and I'm getting ready to take them again. Has anyone failed the first time and passed the second? If yes, what did you do differently to help you pass? Any other advice?

You aren't alone, lots of people don't pass the first time. Just find a good study/review book and go through that, concentrating on the areas you feel are your weakness. Study consistently, every day, and then the day before the test - put it away. Sleep late, go shopping, take a nice long bubble bath - whatever you do to relax. Then go to bed at a descent hour, eat a good breakfast, say a prayer, and do your best.
If I sound like your mother, it's probably because I'm old enough to be your mother. But I've had friends not pass the first time, and reviewing a good study guide is what got them through. The tests are hard - and I think we all spent way too much time trying to figure out what trick answer they wanted. Not good. Just go for what makes sense.
Hold fast to the fact that you ARE going to pass this time.
We need good nurses, and after orientation is over, nobody knows/cares if you didn't pass the first time. They just care that the patients get good care, and that you are a team player.
Good luck!

Everyone in my class passed the first time, my school had a very high pass rate on the boards and a rigorous program.

But I have met a few nurses at work who had to take the test twice or more and passed. I never took it but I hear the Kaplan review is good, have you tried it?

Have you visited allnurses.com? It's the largest and best run nurses community board online. There is a whole section for people about to take/have taken the exam. Check it out- they will be able to help you MUCH better on that site.
