I have a son who's a TV news reporter. He's worked for NBC & Fox networks. It seems to me that the main focus of the news is to draw viewers, which makes the networks their money. Of course, they use the facts to do it, but they don't rely on them completely!
Local news stations like "news" with a local flavor. I always remember the time there was a big plane crash and I was working at the local airport. All 3 news outlets were in our office wanting to know if there was anyone from our area on board! It seemed so icky, but they know that that's the angle that draws the most interest from local viewers.

They are out to make money, They are a BUSINESS.
Who goes into business with the goal of losing miney?
That being said, the way to make money in the media (news) industry is through the truth.
Its called economics - Supply and demand.
If they do not report the truth, they will lose viewers, if they lose viewers, they make l;ess moeny.
so, while they are profit driven, it is the truth that drives those profits.
I think it was Dan Rather that was fired for releasing false news. Also, there was that guy at the NEw York Times that was fabricating stories a few years ago.
This hurts the companies reputation as a reliable source of news, which drives viewers away, so they do their best to ensurethe truth is reported, as that is what attracts the viewers.
That being said, They report THEIR view of the truth, which may not coincide with your view of the truth. That doesnt make them wrong, just puts them at diagreement with you.
Just because someone doesnt agree with you, doesnt make them wrong and you right.

More and more I see it, the more I feel that they are out to make money 90% of the time and pursuing the truth 10% of the time. They feel that nobody wants to know the truth if it is not sensational. Let us hope that the media will change for the better in the future. Bring back Walter Cronkite.

Lets not be too cruel on the media, everyone has to make a crust, trying to do it in an ethical way helps with ones reputation so it is natural to try to achieve this as well (or pretend one does)

In commercial markets, it's about news but also about ratings and corporate sponsorship. That's why I stick with non-profit (i.e. public) radio and television news. They're largely listener-supported which means there aren't sales people breathing down the back of reporters, trying to influence what's shared on the air.
