Hi I have a little guy who will be 4 months next week. I also was told to start cereal at 3 months 8 years ago with my daughter and now I am told 4 months with my son. I started him on cereal last week though because he was reaching for food at the table and watching us all eat. I felt so mean!.. If they are close to 4 months and can sit with support and are showing an interest in food and also have lost the reflex to push food from their mouth I think it is time. All babies are different. Just don't force him to eat if he is not ready. It will not help them to sleep longer. My son sleeps just the same as he did before the cereal he goes to bed at 8:30 wakes up between 1:30 and 3:30 for first feeding goes back down and then gets up between 4:30 and 6:30 for second feeding. nothing changed whatsoever! If you do feed him cereal only feed rice cereal for now mixed with formula or breastmilk because they can have allergies this young to food which is why we are supposed to wait. make it just thick enough to go on a soft baby spoon and give small spoonfuls to (just on tip of spoon) if he swallows then he is ready! If he spits it out he has not lost the reflex to push things out of the mouth yet. Wait until you talk to your doctor to introduce any other foods

Four months is the absolute earliest cereal should be introduced. We actually tell people between 4-6 months. It should be fed by a spoon only, never in a bottle. The baby needs to be able to sit supported in a high chair first. I know many people will tell you that they gave their babies cereal in a bottle and they did it when the baby was less than 4 months old, but they were doing it against a doctor's advice. Only in rare circumstances does a doctor have a parent give the baby the cereal earlier and it's because there is some problem, usually with reflux. Please listen to your doctor.

yes they do say the right age to start is about 4 months because their little systems are not ready for much else, especially not food and allergies develop sooner if you start solid food too soon. But my son who is 9 now was just not getting full enough with the formula and I was at my wits end cuz I was going through so much formula and I was ALWAYS feeding him. So finally at 2 months his dr gave me the okay to put a little cereal in his bottle to make it 'stick to his ribs' and it worked great

You should wait till 4-6 months
However my child never fit the "normal development"
He ate cereal at 2 months off a spoon and baby food by 4 months. He stopped eating baby food by 6 months and was on table food. He also had 6 teeth by then so he could chew it.

My pediatrician says 4-6 months rice cereal in her formula - about a teaspoon or two. 6-8 months, they're ready for fruits and veggies mashed and also a little mashed meat. At 6 months you can give her rice cereal mixed iwth formula like babyfood.
Hope this helped!

when all 5 of my kids were babies, my doctor advised to start putting some in the bottle at 1 month of age. I was able to start actual feeding with a spoon at 3 months of age and that was including cereal and the other 1st stage foods. (my kids are now 9 - twins, 7,4 and 2).
Everything you read tells you the exact opposite. I went with my doc's advice because he is the professional and knew my babies (the advice books did not know my kids..) and i went with my heart.
None of them had any problems at all during the baby stage of eating...no food allergies or anything like that.
They are all healthy, normal and happy (well, most of the time...and sometimes i wonder about normal-haha)
hope my input helps you...

Your baby is ready for solid food when:
is between 4 to 6 months old, can sit up with very little help, can hold head up, opens mouth when food is offered, is able to take food from a spoon, can turn head to accept or refuse food.
It is not recommended to give any baby under 4 months cereal. They may not be ready to swallow and it can cause them to choke, it results in greater chance for food intolerances, and it is a contributor to childhood obeisity.

My pediatrician told me that she usually doesn't recommend giving babies cereal until at least 5 months...when my daughter was about 4 and a half months I started her on rice cereal after consulting the pediatrician...she was fine and loved it.

My pediatrician told me to wait until 6 months. I did. Carson loves his cereal now!!! I put the Gerber cereal in his bottle for extra flavor and nutrition.

I started both my children at 6 weeks putting a teaspoon of cereal in there formula in there bottles right before bed and opening the nipple a little bit. They did really well on it. They didn't gain to much weight and then started sleeping through the night well. I started feeding them by spoon when they were 3 months
