I have a Sony Vaio that is of PCG-Z1 model range. It took a short drop of about half a meter. It worked fine for a few days but then problems began. When the power button is pressed, LEDs light up and the hard disk spins, before slowng down and stopping, but the POST does not happen and the laptop does not boot. The laptop does boot up however when tilted at a certain angle and works normally should the laptop be maintained at this odd angle. If it starts up in the tilted position and Windows starts, should the laptop be moved...the whole screen freezes and nothing else will happen. I originally thought it was just a loose connection, but someone has said that it is perhaps a motherboard problem. Does anyone know exactly what the problem might be?

It sounds like you have a bad connection with a wire or something. Take it in for repair. If your motherboard was bad or the harddrive was bad, it would give you problems no matter what angle.

The average life of a regularly used laptop battery is 18-24 months, after which it no longer holds more than 50% of it's capacity. However, overheating of the laptop is more closely associated with insufficient air circulation, a fan not working, or a bad pcb (power control board) - which is what your battery connects to internally.

PS, The newer pc's and laptops are designed to shut down (it shouldn't be crashing) when it gets too hot, in order to protect the internal parts. Not sure what you mean by crashing. What it should be doing is just turning itself off. Most people use 'crashing' to refer to their system suddenly becoming unresponsive, or getting a fatal error message, and their only option is to turn the power off.

Sounds like you have a broken a solder joint on the motherboard when you dropped it , most likely the power connection . Gravity is making the connection when tilted.

Well it could be just a loose wire that got knocked in the fall, or there could be a tiny crack in one of the mobo connections. If you feel confident enough in your ability, you could try taking the case off and tightening all the connectors.

You have a loose connection at the hard drive, take it to an authorized repair facility and let them fix it!

Exactly, no.

My guess is the same as yours. A loose connection. If not that, you may have sustained a crack on the mother board.

My combo cdw-dvd drive will play cds and cd-roms but will not play dvds; when I load a dvd nothing happens and it makes this "clicking" sound. I've been told that I should replace the dvd drive. Is this complicated?
