most tourist places like to use either american dollars or british pounds, be careful when you are bargaining if you decide to use egyptian pounds, i bargained long and hard on a price in pounds only to be told when i tried to pay the agreed upon price that he meant the price in british pounds, it really ticked me off since i am an american and dont have a british accent and i was with my egyptian husband at the time. otherwise, 50 piastres is a half egyptian pound just like 50 cents is a half dollar in america.

to be honest it really doesn't matter. i went to sharm in january & all they really liked to accept is english pounds, which i found weird but nice in a way as i didnt have to worry about exchange rates or anything.
