From the EA site:
If you have songs available in MP3 or WMA format, you can easily add them to your game, here's how:

1. Open the My Documents folder.
2. Open the EA Games folder.
3. Open The Sims 2 folder.
4. Open the Music folder.
5. Each folder is named for when/where the music is played. Just drag and drop, or copy and paste, your music files to the appropriate folder.

Now your music will be included in the playlist of songs for the game.

Haven't played this in a while, but are you adding your own folder in the music directory and the putting the music in there? or where did you exactly try to put the music files?
