Zidane for coming out of retirement to help France. He single-handedly brought France to the finals and got them within a goal of the World Cup. Without him France wouldn't have stood a chance.

i think all of the top 3 groups: Italy (I don't really like Ita. b/c of their cheating tactics that enabled them to win the cup...sorry Italian fans, but it's my view and analysis from them. Though, b/c they won the cup, to Italian fans, they are your heroes), France, and Germany b/c of what their achievements. They've really represented their country well, and show soccer skills. But personally, for me, I will have to say that Germany and the German National Team are the real hero of WC2006. They were the perfect host, and the German national team really lifted up the national morales in their country ever since WWII. German patrioticism came back by storm. Plus the German national team just received the highest honor in sport with the Silver Bay Leaf, which the nation thanks them for what they've achieved, it was incredible. As for Germany, although they didn't win the cup, but they did make friends with other nations.

The fans themselves.
I watched virtually all of the matches of the World Cup and as far as I can remember there was no shown violence among people or, even worse, threats of terrorists acts.
Thumps up for the soccer world fans.
Not so good for the Argentine team at their elimination or Zindane at the final. Disappointing examples for a world sick of violent displays.

First, ZIDANE!!!! Because he is indescribably amazing! And what he did shows even more that he is a hero! And second, Jens Lehmann, because he overcame years of scorn to rise to number one goalkeeper in the world, he led Germany to the semifinal with his great skill vs Argentina, and he would have led Germany to the finals had the semifinal match gone to a penalty shootout! But sadly, because of very bad luck, it didn't. Jens Lehmann is class!!! I feel sad that now he will never be able to lift that trophy which he deserves! In my heart, however he is a real champion!!

Klose because he supported well for the whole team. followed by Canavaro and Buffon for the amazing work on the Italian defense.
