Ultimately, retention comes through repeated use. Have occasion to use your brain; like a muscle, it grows stronger with activity. Read widely, talk with learned people. When you encounter unfamiliar words, seek to learn their meanings. If you really care enough to cultivate your intellect, it will happen.
Mere cramming, on the other hand, won't yield jack squat.

I used to find a word every three days. I would look it up, memorize the spelling, pronunciation and definition. Then, most importantly, I'd use the word as often as possible in conversation.
It's also helpful to tape the word/definition on your computer or somewhere you go to every day. The repitition helps.

read a book, newspaper or magzine in English, encircle the new words, later on write their meanings on the same place, so that when you read next time, you may get and remember the meaning easily.

First, read!...It's the best vocabulary and spelling teacher. Then, use a good dictionary...like the Oxford..., you can access it online!
