i have just been looking in hardware manger and noticed that the sis 730 display (the onboard graphics) had been disabled as i am using a pci radeon 9250
this made me think,i have been unable to install a agp(gforce 4 mmx)card on the agp slot,i tried everything, bios settings, updating drivers but to no avail
could disabling the sis onboard graphics have any bearing on the failure of the agp card
if i uninstalled the drivers for the onboard graphics, which have been there since i got the p.c(but disabled) ,then tried to install the agp card after that ,would this make a difference
any ideas?

Some motherboards disable the onboard graphic card when you install another one. The problem with your gforce may be incompatible AGP version between card and motherboard.
AGP comes in 2x, 4x and 8x speeds. You have to make sure that both your gforce and your motherboard have the same AGP speed. In some motherboards, you can configure that.

If windows sees the SIS then the hardware is not really disabled on the motherboard. To do that you must disable it in the BIOS. This is using the APG port to run. So that is why you cannot add a APG video card.

Usually you get into the BIOS by hitting the DEL key while the BIOS display is first on screen or the system info screen. This will be the first thing you see after the Video bios loading screen disappears.

In the BIOS, look for 'shared ram' setting and set it to zero or disabled if the option is there. Many mainboards automatically switch to AGP if a card is detected. Also, try making sure 'vga boot from' option is set to AGP not pci/onboard. Additionally, have you tried a different AGP card incase thee GF4 is dead or incompatible?
Worst case scenario is invest in a better mainboard, preferably not a SIS based one.

when you install a video card into a motherboard, the bios will automaticallly disable the onboard video card. the problem is your video card, try to look if your video card is compatible with with your operating system, sometimes windows dont install uncompatible devices.

you could replace all agp video enjoying cards w/ all different agp video enjoying cards. for example, you could replace an nvidia card w/ an ati card and vice versa. only be sure you have an agp 4x or greater slot. nvidia vanta? not at all even heard of that one.....
