Presumably this is only half the question , the rest, i assume is "you cant leave the lion alone with the goat and the goat with the Yam", if this is the case :

1) Take the goat across
2) go back with nothing
3) take the lion across
4) come back with the goat
5) take the yam across
6) come back with nothing
7) take the goat across.

And they are all on the other side

Put the yam in a tree so the goat won't eat it. Bring the lion across and tie him to a tree on the other side. Then get the yam out of the tree and bring it to the other side. You can leave it on the ground since I doubt a lion would find a yam to be tasty. Then go get the goat.

I think you're missing part of this riddle...

Throw the yam across the stream. The goat will chase the yam, the lion will chase the goat. You won't even need the canoe.
Provided the goat and the lion are hungry, of course.

Take the goat across. Come back and take the lion across. Bring the goat back and take the yam across. Then come back and get the goat. Heck the lion might eat the yam if it is hungry.
