If it's not obvious who it belonged to, then just hold on to it. There won't be any way to identify who had it, especially when just dropped in the parking lot. Obviously if you saw someone drop it, you ought to return it.
I've had this experience twice. Nobody around, no way to know. I've also lost $80, so I figure the money just works its way around now and then :)

Pick it up and make a note of the license plates of the nearest cars. Go into the establishment nearest the parking lot and inquire about the owners of the nearest cars. If they can be located, inquire about the loss of "an item that appears to be of value." If someone can correctly describe it, it's theirs.
I actually did this once with a diamond ring. O*

I dropped a bill like that once at a railway station. It had hardly hit the ground when someone picked it up. Fortunately I saw it and realized it was what I had dropped. I had a job getting it back from him !

I would pick it up and take it to the police station. If anyone doesn't claim it within like 30 days then it automatically would go to me. I would feel good because I gave the chance for someone to claim it and if no one claimed it then I would be $100 richer.

Unless I saw who dropped it I would have to figure that it is my lucky day.
I mean what are you going to do stand there and ask people if they dropped this $100 bill.
I wonder how many are going to say No I never saw that bill before in my life and how many are going to say Oh yeah I dropped that, silly me, please give it back .

Finders Keepers: Unless you see or hear someone exclaiming he/she lost some money and looking for it everywhere. If you should see someone frantically looking, ask what they are missing and then give it back if they describe it.

Keep it. It is not likely you will find the owner, but if you do, and you are sure, then give it back.
Don't tell everyone you found it (except us).

It wasn't yours to begin with. Ask around, see if anybody lost a large amount of money, ask them to verify it by saying *themselves* how much it was instead you ever saying it, and then if no-one claims it, give it to charity.
