Some good newer metal bands and some older, but always great(if you like the harder stuff) are Lamb of God, Nevermore, Opeth, DevilDriver, Arch Enemy (fronted by a kick-a** chick), Stratovarius, Slayer, IRON MAIDEN (the gods!), Children of Bodom, Queensryche, Judas Priest, Exodus, Testament, Pantera, Overkill, Mercyful Fate, Motorhead, Faith No More, God Forbid, and Cacophony.
I know I am missing some I can't think of right now, but that's a start...

If you like heavier stuff, check out the following:
KARP (self titled, or Suplex)
Big Business (Head for the Shallow)
The Melvins (Houdini, Stoner Witch or Stag)
Enemymine
Alice in Chains (Dirt)
