I KNOW!!!!! Thank you! I was thinking the same friggin thing! Dumbledore will have his portrait, why cant Harry just get advice from that??? I hope JKR explains this in the next book or I will be pissed!
Thanks for the props on my tattoo!! As a side note, I am already getting one on my hand of a lightning bolt! That'll be done next week!

I think it has to do with the fact that, a portrait is only a portrait and of course it's not the same as the real Dumbledore. Also Harry is still in shock and I think he doesn't really realizes it that he can ask him for help.

Aren't the portraits only there to help the current headmaster? So maybe the portrait of Dumbledore would only converse with the new headmaster, not anyone else.

Harry will talk to it in Book 7, I'm sure. After all, Dumbledore was his mentor and his training is not done, as far as I can tell. I believe he was just in shock, jut like he didn't see the Threstals (sp?) until the beginning of book 5 when he should have seen them at the end of book 4.

OMG! I thought I was the only one! I feel that the portrait is a fake. In book 4 Rita Skeeter had alot of photos taken of Harry that dipicted him in a false way. Her captions and pictures were always fake. Just like her 'Quick Quotes Quill'.

Harry was in shock plus he wasn't thinking correctly. When something terrible happens people don't realize that there are things they could do such as Harry not realizing that he could talk to Dumbledore.

yeah that was annoying..but he was sleeping. and perhaps jk will add in some "rules" or whatever about the portraits.. pretty much i was kinda disappointed with a lot of things, because she was cramming all these new horcrux details and characters in the last minute, and now she only has #7 to fix it all up. meh.
i still love HP tho..but still!!!

A couple of reasons. One, the portraits are only there to assist the new headmaster and aren't "alive." Also, he was sleeping which may be something that they do for a while at first.

Maybe Harry was still in shock. He DID see Dumbledore die, you know!
