Best equals innovative games, easy multiplayer setup, graphics, game library.

My son is 8 and loves sports, puzzel, and driving games. Kid friendly side scrollers are fine too. We don't let him play fighting or violent games. My daughter is 6 and fits the above although more puzzel stuff probably.

If you don't want violence do not get a PSP. All the games for that are shooting or fighting.

I'd say, get a nintendo DS. The games are very kid friendly, but anyone can enjoy them. There's mario which is always fun, mario kart DS which is a nice, easy, fun racing game. Then there are actually games that are meant to stimulate the players mind, so it's great for kids.

The graphics for the DS might not be as good at the PSP, but they are not bad by any means. They are probably better than the nintendo 64. But you kindof forget about how good or bad the graphics are as you're playing it.

At the moment the game library is not huge, but it's growing. There are definetly enough games to keep a 8 year old entertained for months if not years.

The only thing about the new handheld systems is that they are kindof fragile. So I'm not sure how they'll last with a 8 year old. The most durable handheld system ever is probably the game boy advance. Those are nearly indestrucable, mine got ran over by a car and still works fine. The game library for those is gigantic too. Atleast 100 or 200 games for it. Graphics are 2D though, no multiplayer but the games are pretty easy to use.

I would recommend the Nintendo DS. Not the lite. The lites are more fragile I hear. The only way the lites are different is that the backlit screen is slighty brighter, the lite is smaller and lighter than the orignal DS. Other than that, there is no difference.

The games for the DS are TINY though. About the size of two fingernails ( couldn't think of any other way to describe it). But still, they are incredibly easy to lose and near impossible to find if you do lose them. Make sure you have your kids keep them in the case at all times when they're not using them, or else they will get lost, I guarentee it.

So yes, the DS would probably be your best choice. Relatively cheap, great for kids and the most innovative gaming system out. Hope this helps.

For kids I would recommend a DS Lite. The New Super Mario Brothers is a great side scroller. Mario Kart is also lots of fun. The selection of games for the DS is very kid-friendly.
