Because people are unhappy about the way things are going right now and they've been trained by reality TV and the liberal media that it is okay to get into name calling matches when that happens.

I try to stay away as much as possible because I know that's how most of these questions and answers are. If I see one that piques my particular interest I'll click on it. But when I see something like, "Bush is an @$$ let's moan about him" I stear clear.

Add to all of this people can truly express what they feel because they don't have to worry about reprecussions like being called out on their childishness. They're hiding behind the picture in a box. No one knows where they are, what their phone numbers are or anything else. It's very rare that someone actually puts a picture of themselves on this site.

Also there are a lot of immature people here, and I'm not just talking about age. There are people who can't form two sentences if you gave them three commas, two periods, 4 nouns, three verbs and a preposition. Of the ones who have mastered sentence construction maturity escapes them. Now back to age, there are many many children on this site and they get a chance to act out.

Further many people just want attention and many times they have to say the most immature and nasty things to get people to look at them. I look at the people who post intelligent responses.

There are a few gems of rational thought within these walls; though the task of finding them may be arduous. I think those that would like to have intelligent debate should respond with intelligent answers; thus, lead by example. It is awfully tempting to mud-sling at some of the crazier questions, but if one wishes to have sensibility, they need to show some self-restraint. Of course, one can parody an opinion and keep it intelligent if they know the subtle difference between wit and 'smart ***'.

As to why there is a lot of name calling rather than rational dialog, there are a couple of reasons. First, politics is a very emotional issue for many and it is quite easy to express ones political animal with a quick name calling. Next, some people are just childish; while Yahoo! Answers has members of all ages, the primary demographic is the teen that often finds joy in immaturity. Sadly enough, the last reason is that some people actually think some of these crazy thoughts.

I agree with your overall sentiment on the childishness of many in this area; intelligent debaters should not give up as those that would like some a sensible dialog do exist.

I guess that's what passes for "political debate" anymore. Since the mooks in DC do nothing but hurl insults at each other, apparently we all have to as well.

1 - Many of the people on this "forum" are bored and not particularly bright teenagers and college students who aren't working.

2 - They lack the social skills to have friends and, as a result, spend a LOT of time on this site passing time to no useful purpose.

3 - They simply have nothing to say and are, in any case, not capable of the "intelligent debate" you (and I and a number of others) would like to see. This is not the site for intelligent debate.

Because people on here want their way instead of looking at Facts. I am not saying who is right and who is wrong but if people on here are going to argue they should get their Facts right not base there answer on Opinion!! I I myself get a kick out of what people answer and don't have a leg to stand on. Again mostly Opinion and very little Fact. Opinions are like a**holes everyone has one but usually they smell !!

I think that people get passionate about their beliefs - and a lot of times, the questions are filled with insults and are not really intelligent questions, so you can expect insults to be met with insults.

I agree!

Nothing more to say tho.. This is modern politics... The sides have moved to the extremes and closed their minds. Stupidity is rampant.

Two words: Popular Culture.

It's "cool" to be disparaging to the other side, because that's what Rush Limbaugh and Al Franken do. We see it on TV and hear it on the radio, so it must be OK, right?
