When people say you need 8 hours of sleep per day, do they mean that from the moment you fell asleep to the moment you wake up 8 hours had passed or from the moment you lay in bed to the moment you wake up?

They mean when you actually sleep, just lying in bed doesn't count because you still will wake up tired
