You can use a product called Navel Jelly.You must wear thick gloves to aply to surface because this stuff is caustic. Wait five minutes and scrub with steelewool. Rinse with clean water.
Repeat the process as needed.
CAUTION ! this product will damage chrome surfaces on contact. Follow all safty precautions on the label.
You should be able to find it at a hardware store or autoparts store near you.

You should soak it in CLR, in a tub, and scrub it really hard with a wire brush. Once the rust is off, you might consider bying some heat-resistant grill paint and re-painting the surface

This might sound weird but try using Ketchup or toothpaste they booth have some kind of chemical in it that helps with rust.
