Here is what you do... run a google search until you can find the nastiest, deep dank 70's adult film funk music you can find.

Play it really loud each and every time you hear her. It's not exactly passive aggressive... and you can always play dumb and say you are on a Bootsy Collins kick due to something you heard earlier that day.

I personally would lock my mother-in-law in the basement with several sex toys, bad 70's pr0n music and occasionally push stale pizza under the door indefinately if I thought I could survive the prison sentence if I got caught.

It is really NOT your place to say ANYTHING of this sort to your mother-in-law unless you are really really close. Your wife HAS to do the talking. It will sound soooo much better coming from her daughter than any son. Speaking to her about it is okay. But you shouldn't be the one doing the talking. Convince your wife to speak up, she's all grown up now. Its not like her mom can punish her for speaking out because it is your house.

Good luck!!

Why would you want to speak to her about it? Does it embarrass you? I would only say something if there are children in the house, otherwise I say let her have her pleasure. If the sound bothers you, run a fan at night or something to make "white nose" to block it out. If you have to say something, a good way to not embarrass anyone might be to casually mention that any sounds in your basement carry through your house, and hopefully she should get the idea.

It's not wrong to say anything. She is probably unaware of the fact that you can hear her and it could help avoid an awkward situation down the road.

that's nasty,,,,i cant even speak on it ...i mean everyone masturbates but that's your mother in law...lol at least it isn't your mom. but honestly maybe its not your place just let it be known that she is loud make small little comments or bang on the floor and in the morning just go about your day......but what if she wants you to hear her?hmmmm ever thought about that?

LOL, LOL Are you sure she is alone? I mean come on, she may have company. Leave her alone and let her have her fun. If this is how she gets her kicks, then so be it.

Now, if she is obnoxious about it and it is really, really bothering you, then have your wife say something. It is not your place to say something even though it is your house. Think about it, if you and your wife get it on and you're loud, how would you feel if your m-i-l said something to you?

How do you know she is masturbating?

Anyway, I think it would be better if your wife talks to her about it. She's her mother. And she's also a woman. Both will make it easier for them to talk.

She is a human being who probably feels she is missing sex, and self gratification is what is helping her out. Leave her be and maybe sound proof her room if you don't want to hear it, but speaking to her will only lead to embarrassment and possible ill will.
