how to get used to the dark light thing

Alaska has many types of places to live. From very small villages to medium and large cities. You need to figure out what kind of lifestyle you want to live, what type of climate you want to live in and then do some research on the area. Get some job prospects lined up before you come and have a stash of money for getting started. Housing can be expensive.

As far as getting used to the dark and light thing, the degrees of how long light and dark last does vary with where in the state you are. The southern parts of Alaska have less of a continual dark or light per season than the Interior or North Slope. But, to actually answer your question...during dark winter times it is best to have activities to keep you occupied, you tend to notice the continual darkness less. For the daylight, some people totally black out their bedroom windows so they can sleep. But mostly, when you're tired, you'll sleep regardless of light.

Depends on interests. Anchorage is rippin cool :-D
There are over 100 miles of ski/bike trails that interconnect the city. The light in Anchorage is not bad. Our shortest day of daylight is about 5 hours. Homer is small, but coastal, artsy and fun. The farther north you go (Fairbanks) the darker it gets.

The best way to move here, especially as winter approaches is by ferry. Pack your car, bring your sleeping bag, and camp out on the back of the boat. There are heat lamps for warmth (@ times too warm) food, and nice clean, hot showers. They make frequent stops, so you can check out Juneau, Haines and other areas in Southeast. check out www.dot.state.ak.us/amhs/
