This is the problem with having international answerers on UK answers! Definitely the left in the UK. I can still hear the teachers screeching it in school.
To the left Davies, THE LEFT!!!! And stop running!

Whatever side people drive on, in the UK the left, in America the right.
If in doubt whatever side other people generally go on or causes less congestion
On the London underground escalators operate slightly differently
if you are just standing on the step letting the escalator do all the work you stand on the right, leaving the left for people to overtake.
I don;t know how this works in other countries

I like to be nearest the side that has a railing, whatever side that is. If I pass someone going the opposite direction, I use the road rules and move to their left.

The entrance and exits, including going up/down stairs depends on what country you are in and is pretty much the same as how the autos are on your highways. In America, you stay on your right side to drive, enter, go upstairs, etc.....
OBVIOUS EXCEPTIONS... when in Walmart (Kmart, grocery stores, etc...) driving a shopping cart is considered "open season" and you go where you want to and how you want to (apparently disregarding others around you). Afterall, it is all about YOU (the shopper). But that is just my opinion. People tend to "walk like they drive" where I live......

it would depend on the width of the stairs and the building the stairs are in I prefer the side near the wall to go up and the railing side to go down that way no one can look up my skirt on the way up and I can give them daggers on the way down if they are.

If this was an escalator, you wouldn't need to be on either side. You can be in the middle and go all the way down.

Use it like you would the road, always stay on the left, unless your American then stay on the right, and if you fall it's OK to use all of the stairs.

depends.. like others have said:
on which part of the world you are....
doesnt matter if theres no one else on the stairs :-)
away from the railing unless you are feeling tired or sick... so that someone else can use the railing.
or... behind the guy in front!
