It's a criminal conviction. It stays with you for the rest of your life as part of your record. For the purposes of obtaining auto insurance it could cost you more money for 5-10 years.

They will always be on your record. You can only get deferred adjudication for misdemeanors. Since most states have implemented the "3 strikes rule" when it comes to DUI/DWI, those convictions will always be on your record.

In CA, it stays in your driving record for 7 years, and it counts as 2 points against you. As far as background check is concerned, I believe it stays forever...
