The KY state fair is going on right now and they have a section for mules and jacks. I know they are both types of donkeys, but what is the difference between the two?

A mule is a cross between a Jack (male donkey) and a Mare (female horse).

A Jenni (Jenny?) is a female donkey.

Hope this helps!

Hi from Valerie, a MULE is a animal who cannot reproduce, a Male Mule is called a Jack the same as a Donkey is if it is Male also. a Female Mule if crossed with a Horse is called a Jennet, a female Donkey is called a Jenny.
A Jack Donkey mated with a Pony or Horse is called a Hinny. Did you know a female MULE even gthough she can not reproduce herself, will within 24 hours if put next to a foal produce milk and rear an orphan foal of any breed of Horse. Mule's weho are Male are NOT fertile having 1 less gene than a Male Horse or Pony, but are equally annoying if left entire and male as a Stallion might be. The Male Mule can have rudimentory teats as a female might strange isn't it. Mules are HIGHLY intelligent and very strong. I had a Mule he was a wonderfully intelligent little friend and would play football when he got into the football grounds, he would kick a goal for the fellows whose wive's wanted to knit a jumper with a NO.on it for Dusky the Mule as a team-mate. Donkeys cannot have a high grain diet, they do best on hjay and roughage, but a Mule can have grain when working.

Valerie.

It's scary that I know this but here goes.....I think this is right. A donkey or Jack A** , as you so delicately put it, can reproduce and make other donkey's. A Mule is the off spring of a horse and a donkey. when the mule is born it is sterile and can not make other mules. This is why there are people that breed to get mules and why they can command a high price. Mules are a more hearty animal for working on farms and such. They are "built" different from a donkey and can handel heavier loads...hence pack mules and the saying "built like a mule." How do I know this, you ask? I hunt on some land and the owner happened to figure out that he could make more money breeding his horses and donkey's resulting in mules than breeding his horses for farms. Yes, I live in a small town and yes, I am a woman.

A jack is a male donkey or mule.
A female donkey is called a jenny.
A female mule is called a molly.
A female horse/pony is a mare.
A male horse/pony that is capable of breeding is a stallion.
A male horse/pony that has been neutered is a gelding.
The offspring of a stallion and jenny is called a hinny.
The offspring of a jack and a mare is a mule.

The Jacks at the fair are probably the Mammoth Jacks for producing large powerful mules.

A mule is a cross of a male donkey and female horse. A Jack is a male donkey. A hinney is a cross of a male horse and a female donkey. A mule and a hinney can not breed as they are sterile, but jacks can breed.

The difference is that a mule is a cross between a donkey - aka jackass - and a horse. However, a mule cannot reproduce b/c of the breeding differences.
