Just seems that all of the gigantic fiction novels are in the Fantasy genre of which I am not a fan. Does anyone know of any long and well written series of books in either sci-fi or adventure?

The DragonRider of Pern novels by Anne Mccaffrey. ie: Dragonflight, Dragonquest and White Dragon to start with. They are sci-fi, not fantasy in spite of the names.

Gilbert Morris "House of Winslow" series - historical adventure/romance

Issac Asimov's Foundation Trilogy: Foundation, Foundation and Empire, and Second Foundation. (They start a little slow, but stick to it and by the end of the first book you will hooked)

Steve Lawhead the Celtic Crusade: Iron Lance, Black Rood, and Mystic Rose. Historical adventures

The Shannara series by Terry Brooks is Fantasy, but I really liked it. If you just start with "The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara" part of the series they are more adventure than fantasy and the books can stand on there own without reading the previous. If you find yourself pulled into the series you can always go back and read the first books. The only other one I can think of is the "Outlander" series by Diana Gabaldon, but those are geared towards females. Oh- the "Myth" series by Robert Asprin is really good- it is like Sci-fi comedy mixed with fantasy and adventure and each book is an easy read. I dunno- Sci-fi fantasy and adventure are very closely tied together.

Quick note: L. Ron Hubbard is the guy who founded Scientology, if that affects your decision at all.

The rest of the suggestions sound great, especially the Hitchhiker series and the Dragonrider series. Also try "The Wayfarer Redemption" by Sara Douglass. If you like alternate realities, try "Kushiel's Legacy" by Jacqueline Carey. The first in that series is called "Kushiel's Dart." Anything by Anne Bishop is good.

Good luck!

[Edit] Sorry about the fantasy novels. "Wayfarer" and "Kushiel" have fantastical elements, but are pretty adventuresome. Oh! Have you ever read Timothy Zahn? "Triplet" was pretty good.

Check out The Baroque Cycle by Neal Stephenson. It is a historical adventure novel set in the seventeenth/eighteenth centuries involving scientists, politics, pirates, and loads more. Well worth the 3,000 page investment!

I would definitely check out the Dark Tower series by Stephen King.

And! The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams ... you can purchase in one volume a collection of 6 books.

The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova isn't part of a series, but long enough to be an epic in its own right, and a wonderful novel.

Definetly inspect the trilogy via Mary Stewart, its in accordance to arthurian legend yet is so eye-catching, and the characters so genuine.. only %. it up and skim the first few words and also you may recognize what I mean ;) 1rst e book in sequence: The Crystal Cave 2d: The very last attraction, (and it is going on..) also, Lord of The earrings sequence! And completely off topic from books, yet i imagine you may want to fairly like Shaun of the lifeless as a movie. also yet another e book i'd propose to you may want to be eragon, its all mythical. yet definetly The Crystal Cave via Mary Stewart you may want to love for the nature progression (in spite of the reality that thats in eragon to boot..), as he starts out as a small newborn and particularly discovers his destiny and his powers via the time the e book ends even as he's 23 or so. it truly is only great. enable me recognize what you imagine!

Try any of Harry Turtledove's alternate histories - they are certainly epic, well written and well researched.
