THIS IS A BIG ANSWER BUT I HAVEN'T COPIED AND PASTED IT...SO PLEASE APPRECIATE IT

i totally agree with "curious cook". but let me tell you...Do NOT go to Matheran in rainy season. it is a place with red soil and there is a lot of horse sh*t everywhere so the sand gets really gooie and its not that pleasant but once you go to matheran you wouldn't want to leave that place. you might want to take binaculars for sightseeing as matheran is a hillstation. it is not at all cold over there, even in december...we went to matheran in december and thought it would be freezing cold but it wasn't cold at all, not even a bit.

places to visit maybe the Charlote lake(the lake dries up in summer but it is still good), if you are going to matheran for the first time then you might want to go by the toy train...for that you need to get to the station early cuz then they get booked out. you could also go to the market to buy lots of things. you don't exactly need any guide, you will even tually know everything when you get there and there are directions too or you can just ask someone if needed. when you go to the market, be sure to buy the chikki, leather articles, hats, chappals. matheran is famous for its chikkis. go to the ECHO POIINT, one tree hill point, sunset point, the monkey point and just visit as many points as you can...you will end up knowing that most of them are just mountain hills. anyways, other details...

Location: Alibag District, Near Neral At Mumbai, Maharashtra
Uniqueness:Vehicles Of Any Kind Are Not Permitted In The Town, Which Makes It A Very Quiet, Serene Place.
Best Time To Visit: November To May

From Mumbai, one can take a local train to Neral, where a tiny toy train waits to take people to Matheran. Taxis are available from Neral to Dastoori car park one can also catch a bus or taxi from Neral to Dasturi car park from where one will have to walk to Matheran or hire a horse or hand pulled rickshaw. As vehicles are not allowed inside Matheran, ponies are favored as means of transport. Don't miss the train, which is run four times a day. During the monsoon, the service is restricted to one train a day and during heavy rain even this can be cancelled due to landslides.
thats all you need to know and that you need to pay some money to enter matheran or something i don't exactly know what cuz my dad pays it all the time.

if you need to knoiw about anything else just tell me and i'll tell you all about matheran

ohhh i forgot to mention the MOST important thing...that if you are going there for the first time, then you should sit on the horses...they have wierd names...my last horse was named "Sachin"......hehehe

anyways, HAPPY JOURNEY
see ya

Matheran is an undulating hilltop cloaked in shady trees, that sprawls languidly at an altitude of 800 m. The journey involves an adventurous two hour ascent in a toy train.

The Hart Point offers a view of the lights of Mumbai at night! All of Matheran is a series of such quixotically named points that are popular, if isolated, sites for picnics and fireside revelry at night. Charlotte Lake, the Panthers’ Caves and the Paymaster Park are other attractions, especially for children. The old world charm of the British and Parsi homes is an irresistible draw.

The main bazaar offers a variety of items such as cane and leather articles, hats, chappals and the sinfully sweet speciality – CHIKKI ! Vehicles of any kind are not permitted in the town, which makes it a very quiet, serene place.

Mumbai, 100 kms/65 Mile. away is the nearest airport. Neral 21 kms. away, is where you transfer to the toy train. Mumbai is 108 kms. away by road, via Karjat and Neral. Pune is 120 kms. away. Taxis are available from Neral to Dastoori car park. No vehicles are allowed inside Matheran and ponies are the favoured means of transport.

Season : October to May.

Altitude : 803.47 Metres.

Temperature : 16’C in winter to 32’C in summer.

Matheran is a hill station situated some 70 kms from mumbai,
it would be advisable to start early morning and catch up a local train on central line (VT-- CST / Dadar/ Kurla / Kalyan ) to Karjat and get down at Neral Railway station.(dont confuse NERAL with NERUL which is different place and is on Harbour line).
From Neral u may go in the mini train which takes u to the hilltop in about 3 hrs; or u can hire a cab or any other local means of transport.
It is not that cold , if u are traveling in rainy season , carry the rainy clothes and extra dresses, otherwise its not that cold.
U can carry , what u usually carry for any outing.

i hope this is enough, in case any more suggestions required , u can contact me via email.

If going for the first time then don't miss a chance to travel by toy train from Neral to Matheran or vice versa.
