Why do we get points for asking/ answering questions? And what do we do with the points?

Well surely points are not as useless as told earlier! If you enjoy on yahoo answers u need the pts to participate more. Below is the link where u can find details abt the points system and also the benefits of various levels

For each question asked, you get 5 points deducted. For each question answered, you get 3 points added. For each answer that was determined to be the best answer (usually a few days after you answer the question), you get 10 points added. All the points add up so you can go to certain levels. At each level, you can ask so many questions and answer so many questions. The higher the level, the more questions you can ask and them more questions you can answer.

Yeah, we don't do anything with the points. They are worthless, pointless, and just allow us to waste time on here instead of doing things we need to do. Like work for example. I like to think of it as entertainment. Nothing more.

They are really pretty worthless, actually. I enjoy using Yahoo Answers to get INFORMATION, which is far more valuable that meaningless points.
