Go through and delete all unwanted files and programs.
Switch off System Restore while you clean up.
Defragment the hard drive from Start - programs - accessories - system tools - disk defragmenter. Leave it till its finished.
Install Avast anti virus, Ewido anti trojan, Ad-Aware SE Personal and run them in Safe Mode.

To get into safe mode, repeatedly press the F8 key after the bios screen loads but before Windows loads, if you don't manage it first time just restart and try again.
Safe mode looks very different and not all your programs will load but don't worry, its supposed to do that. The screen will run at 800 x 600. The scans will take a bit longer so just leave it to get on with it.

The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc from dialling out. Either of these firewalls are free for personal use and stop unwanted incoming and outgoing traffic. You choose which programs are allowed to access the internet. They are both fairly easy to use and updated regularly.

Instal both these web browsers, turn off javascript on one and use that browser for vising unknown websites. They don't support Active X so thats one less way for problems to get on your pc.

1) Check for spyware. Run both Ad-aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/) and Skybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/) to remove any spyware. Run both as one may caught something the other missing. Then go to microsoft.com and download Defender to protect against future infections.

2) Check that you have a least 10% of your hard drive free. Go to My Computer and right click on the Local Drive (C:). Look at the properties. If it has less that 10% free space, you will need to delete some files, or move them off the hard drive and on to a CD or DVD. Start by running the disk cleanup, which will remove temporary and other unneeded files. Go to Start, then All Programs, then System Tools and click the Disk Cleanup icon.

3) Run the msconfig utility. Go to Start, then Run and type in: msconfig
Go to the startup tab
You will see a list of all the programs that are loaded when your computer starts up. Uncheck any that you do not have to have. (Usually you can uncheck them all). If you decide you to need one, you can go back and recheck it.

4) Defrag the hadr drive. Go into My Computer and right click on the Local Drive (C:). Select Properties and go into the Tools tab. Click the Defragment Now button to start the defrag program. If you have not defrag recently (or never) it may take several hours for the program to complete.

I really like dewcoons answers.
There are several procedures which may speed us your system. BTW I assume you are using MS Windoz.
1. Cleanup your trash. Run Ccleaner from ccleaner.com. It is free and very good. And of course defrag after.
2. Update and run your antivirus and antiadware programs.
3. Here is where I will expand on dewcoons #3.
For advise on what all these startup items are go to sysinfo.org/startuplist.php .
They have over 12,000 startup items listed with explanations and advise.

Windoz is a dirty OS and need a lot of maintenance. Do the above at least once a week.

Good Luck,

The best option is to reinstall the Operating System
and try to never install any software on C Drive.

other try outs

1)Try to uninstall all the unwanted programs
then
Run the Disk clean up for all the drives then run the Disk Defragmenation
(u can find both option at start menu)

2) Try to download and install Nortan Antivirus and check for virus

First of all go Start>Run>msconfig in that pop-up go Startup and uncheck all the programs that you don't want to run in the startup, be carefull don't uncheck drivers.
Then clean your computer with Disk Cleanup Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Cleanup
Also do a Defragment Start>All Programs>Accesories>System Tools>Disk Defragment. [For better results download CCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com ]
After that press right click to Local Disc>Properties>Tools>Error-Checking>Scan for and attemprecovery of bad sectors
Also download a antivirus and antispyware i would recommend AVG Free Edition http://www.grisoft.com for antivirus and for antispyware Spybot Search & Destroy http://www.spybot.com/download Scan in Safe Mode.
That's all your computer is clean and fresh.

Clean with Spybot or something similar for spyware.
Clean the drive and then defragment. (Start>Programs>accessories>system tools)
if still slow check if can upgrade RAM www.crucial.com will check your system to see if you can upgrade.
Besides these main steps you need a new computer.

Go into tools...Internet options...Delete cookies and temporary internet files... This may take a while, which will mean that it needed doing... Other than that, look on the hard drive, and see if you have much stuff that you have saves that you really dont need anymore!!!! If this still doesn't make it go quicker, I recommend that you hit it ... Wont make it go any faster, but it will make you feel better!!!!!!! :o)

Go through all the files on your computer and delete files you don't need or don't use, then de frag it. If you still have the problem, then i don't know. It might just be that there is not enough memory left on your computer.
