Beach Music by Pat Conroy
Okay, it's been a while since I've read the book, but here it goes:
Jack McCall, an American living in Rome with his young daughter, is trying to find peace after the recent trauma of his wife's suicide. But his search for solitude is disturbed by his sister-in-law, and by two schoolfriends who want his help in tracking down another classmate who went underground as a Vietnam protestor and never resurfaced. As Jack begins a journey that encompasses the past and the present in both Europe and the American South, he also begins a quest that will lead him to shocking truths.
Jack McCall-played by Dylan McDermott
Shyla McCall-played by Michelle Phfifer(sp)
Jordan(Jack's army brat friend)-Brad Pitt
Blythe Danner would play his mother
Jason Robards if he were still alive would play his father, but I guess Robert Duvall would play him just as well
He has a love interest, I can't remember her name, but Julia Roberts would be a good choice
He has a few other friends, I would cast Vince Vaughn as the snooty political office seeker and Matt Damon as the other friend.
That's all I can think of right now.
BTW, I know Blythe Danner and Robert Duvall both starred in The Great Santini, but they are great actors and I pictured her as the mother from the beginning.
