Angiography is a way to take a look at your blood vessels. Basically, a technician injects a dye into your vein or artery, and then takes pictures (like an X-ray). Because the dye is radio-opaque, you can see it on the x-ray films - so you can see the path of your blood vessels, and how good the blood flow through those vessels is. The reasons for the procedure are many. Maybe you have heart disease, and the doctor needs to do a coronary angiography to see how well the blood flows through the arteries that supply your heart. Or, they need to check the blood flow to your legs, etc. Its generally pretty safe, but the dye can be toxic to your kidneys, so its important to be well hydrated before the exam. Your doctor may give you medication to help protect your kidneys or to prevent you from having an allergic reaction to the dye. Hope that helps.

Angiography or arteriography is a medical imaging technique in which an X-ray picture is taken to visualize the inner opening of blood filled structures, including arteries, veins and the heart chambers.

Its name comes from the Greek words angeion, "vessel", and graphien, "to write or record". The X-ray film or image of the blood vessels is called an angiograph, or more commonly, an angiogram.

They want to see how clogged your arteries might be.
