Its a brain burp....kinda goes along with puberty.
Sadly, some never grow out of it.
Maybe research will someday find it is somehow related to a defective gene pool....I just hope there's a cure.

Not all teenage girls do say that. That is mostly the valley girl trend that started in the 90's around the clueless era. Some girls today however have not noticed that it has been dead for 10 years now.

Not only teenage girls say that. Some do it because they think it's "kewl".
I personally do that when I'm trying to find the perfect word to describe what it is that I want to say. It's sort of a "buy myself a quick minute to think" type of word.

It's the way they grew up around people saying like so themselves start to make a habit of it. When people say umm in the middle of there sentence it's the same thing isn't it?

I've realized that too! I say that too. lol. Its not a trend or whatever but its just the way we talk. How else are we gonna say what other people are saying. For example, Like yesterday I was talking to Aundrea and I was like "Hey aundrea how your doing?" And she was like, "Hey what your doing friday?" And I was like "Nothing you wanna go to the movies" And she was like no I hate the movie theathers!!" And she walked away now she hates me!
Something like that you know?

not all teenage girls say "like" all the time. Thoses that do are usually concited preppy cheerleaders that have no concept that then english language has more then just the word "like" in it.

i can't speak for the teens in america,but over here in the uk,the whole "like" thing never took off. no-one over here ever says "like" before another word, unless they're sayng they "like" something. besides, the whole clueless thing is a bit old now..that film was out 11 years ago..c'mon teens, find something else to replace "like" with.."like" is so 1995...

i mean i never say 'like' although i am in habbit of saying 'i mean'
and i dont think this is some kind of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, i mean i can any time get rid of it !!!!!
and so can other teenage girls who say 'like' before everything!!!
