The Cincinntai Red Stockings were the first "professional" team, but there's not really a single "first team in ML." The Reds may have been pros, but they didn't play in an organized major league. I think, instead, that the teams from the National League's first year of existence (1876) would all qualify:
Chicago White Stockings
Boston Red Caps
Philadelphia Athletics
Hartford Dark Blues
St. Louis Brown Stockings
New York Mutuals
Louisville Grays
Cincinnati Reds
Of that group, only one still exists - the Chicago franchise that eventually became the Cubs. The Reds and A's are around, but they are different and non-continual franchises from that group of 1876.
