Street Fighter, definitely!
I used to be a huge Mortal Kombat fan, but I got my Genesis out and played MK1-3 the other day and was like, "What the crap?!" The graphics were bad, the control was worse, and the third one had 18 different ninjas who looked exactly the same except their color. I have to wonder what I (and everyone else) was thinking.
Street Fighter, on the other hand, is just as fun now as it used to be. Tight controls, great characters, awesome music, and a balanced system that cuts down on cheapness makes Street Fighter a perennial winner. "Hadoken!"

mortal combat,
mortal combat was ahead of its time back in the day. street fighter was also a good game but lacked the gore and downright nastiness that I think people enjoy on a day to day basis.
mortal combat I think was a very thought about and well put together game, with special codes and hidden secrets along with graphics that were, lets face it ahead of its time.

Arcade style Street Fighter II not nintendo or anything...use to play this non-stop at the local "cirle K". Not to take anything away from Mortal Kombat 'cause that game ruled as well! Just prefer SFII...

I love mortal combat. YOu get to choose who you want to be of the fighters and then fight your oponent. that is just so cool, but I have not played it in a while.

Mortal Combat- Handicap to make battles longer, fataliteis,babalities, friendship, brutalites, etc. Codes to make it more fun, hidden characters and powers. Blocking still kills you so its more fair.
Street fighters- Battles end TOO quickly, hardly any codes, gets boring REAL fast
