Alphabetically: Jefferson, Lincoln, Washington. Each of them made enormous and unique contributions to our country. Washington brought our nation together against almost impossible odds. Jefferson was largely responsible for some of our country's precious documents, and he more than doubled the size of America. Lincoln brought about the abolition of slavery and preserved the union. It's impossible to rank them, but they all stand head and shoulders above the other great men who have led our country.
I'm a Republican, but I'll have to admit that
the worst are George W. Bush and Ronald Reagan

It is a tought choice between llincoln and Washinton.
Lincoln brought the country from the brink of destruction. Imagine what World War I and II would have been like with a divided America.
But Washington did something that no leader had ever done before in the history of elected government. He was asked to be king. People wanted him to keep on running well past eight years. He stepped aside after two terms and let America become what it is today. A similiar leader of his time, Napolean, turned his "democracy" into a dictatorships and empire. Lennon turned a communist country into a dictatorship. Caesar turned Rome into an empire with him as absolute authority.
In addition, he won the revolutionary war. Set up numerous practices of today. He so modest that he never referred to the capital as Washington DC, but as the Federal City.
Washington 1
Lincoln 2
Roosevelt 3 (or maybe Jefferson)

George W. Bush and his father, George H.W. Bush, will go down in history as the worst two presidents of the U.S.A. 9to date). Thomas Jefferson was the best, in my opinion, because he had a keen understanding of what democracy was all about. He once said: "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."
Jefferson recognized that hubris, arrogance, avarice and sloth would eventually corrupt those who were placed in positions of power, wealth, influence and authority. He realized that if we are to remain a free people, an American Revolution MUST take place every so often so that the structure of government can not corrode and become impotent (as it is today). -RKO-

Ronald Reagan
Prevented Nuclear Anhilation/ World War III
George Washington
Overcame the temptation to become king and ensured that democracy would reign instead
Abraham Lincoln
Died proving that American Ideals were more than just paper promises
Without these particular men, the US would not exist in any recognizable form.
JFK is/was the most popular in history books. that does not make him great. Good president, but not great.

When you refer to we all know, do you mean you have a mouse in your pocket? Every 20 years or so America is blessed with a great president like President Bush, that has the tenacity and nerve to clean up all the crap the wimpy prior presidents left our great country in, weak and insecure. I hope you live long enough for history to prove this truth. It has already shown us Carter and Clinton to be complete boobs.

While I disagree with you, I will play your game..
Greatest President in history:
Many would argue Reagan. Or perhaps Lincoln.
Other notables would be Roosevelt (both of 'em) and John F. Kennedy.
It would be difficult to decide on a 'best' as they have all accomplished different things.
According to Forbes, (based on GDP, employment growth, etc.. for postwar presidents) Clinton is the best:

For starters, NO, we DON'T all know that George W. Bush is the worst President in history -- I can think of a certain flag-burning, dope-smoking, secretary-screwing, White-Watering, secret-selling, felon-pardoning, philandering son of a ***** who was much worse and much more of a laughingstock around the world...As for the best, I would put Abraham Lincoln at the top because he made the hard choice, even though he didn't want to. He did the honorable thing, he took responsibility for his actions as Chief Executive, and he was very good at unifying people with vastly different points of view.

George Washington, without whose presidency we probably would not have had a country for long, and Abraham Lincoln, who waffled on slavery but ultimately kept the country from the slippery slope of secession and came down on the right side of the slavery question. Had he lived, the Reconstruction would have been very different and this country would have been the better for it.
