Alexander Fleming expressed initial optimism that penicillin would be a useful disinfectant, being highly potent with minimal toxicity compared to antiseptics of the day, but particularly noted its laboratory value in the isolation of "Bacillus influenzae" (now Haemophilus influenzae).
The first patient to be treated with Penicillin was Anne Miller, who was suffering from Scarlet Fever, which caused a miscarriage and a subsequent streptococcal infection. John Bumstead and Orvan Hess treated her with the drug.

Penicillin was a turning point in human history — the first real defense against bacterial infection.
Penicillin (sometimes abbreviated PCN) refers to a group of β-lactam antibiotics used in the treatment of bacterial infections caused by susceptible, usually Gram-positive, organisms.
