It relates to the strength of the elastic. The bigger the fish you are going after, the higher the elastic rating you require. It does not pay to put on heavy elastic if you are going after smaller fish such as roach or rudd because they will just "bump off" the hook. You should check with the manufacturer or supplier of your pole for the heaviest elastic that it can take. I suggest a size 18 for medium sized carp and perhaps a 10 or 12 for smaller stuff. I put a number 2 elastic on my whip for tiddler-bashing.

Reword this question so that we can understand and then sure. If your talking about the action on a fishing pole its cause you use different ones for different fish cause the lures will differ in weight and size

the pole will have a elastic rating,the elastic you use will depend on the fish your after catching. e.g : roach/bream you would use a no.6 elastic with probably 2.6lb line +(.10mm-.12mm) and for carp tench near snags you would use a 12+ elastic with 4lb+ line (.14mm-16mm)
