If it's what he wants to do then why not? Money isn't everything and if he decides in years to come that he fancies a change of direction, then it's never too late to study/train in something else
Good for him for having the motivation and strong-will to do what interests him and will give him job satisfaction. I wish him luck

I think if he is creative, this could leapfrog him into a very lucrative career. If he is successful in his field, he could produce keep fit video's, open a gym, perhaps even become a celebrity which can be lucrative in itself.
I've recently been thinking, there should be a motivational radio station with personal trainers speaking, so when my radio alarm clock goes off, I have someone telling me why its a good idea to get up and do some press ups!

No. Not at 17. A personal trainer is someone that not only knows the business, but has the ability to gain peoples trust and can motivate them. Someone that has earned their stripes in the sports world.
I would start looking for a general education in sports and get some experience first. And the most important: build a name for yourself, build some credibility, meet people and network.

Sure. He'll get PLENTY of leotard, have an early midlife crisis and have nothing but a widening butt to fall back on.
The market is just far too short of 50 year old personal trainers

I don't think he will get rich as a personal trainer, but there are 2 good things about it.
1. Keeps him in good shape and healthy lifestyle (no drugs, smoking, drinking, etc)
2. Health spa and gym memberships will probably continue to grow, so it may even become a boom

In my opinion, yes. He'd be able to earn alot per hour and feel a sense of achievement in getting people fit and healthy. Altho, I would recommend he does some other qualification as he won't necessarily have the desired amount of clients to support his living. Perhaps try and work in a gym also? Anyway, best of luck to him :o)

yes don't worry about him his choice from my point of veiw is a good one. he will stay in shape, make lots of money, dependant on how good he is he could be training the stars, if he goes it alone make sure he knows what he is doing. with taxes and business advice. if he doesn't like it hes young enough to learn something else but don't push him he will resent you for it.
