Definitely, definitely like watching it live better. On Broadway, the touring cast, whatever. I've seen it live ten times and each time has been amazing - all of them, even the worst, was a million times better than the movie.

Rent is all about ENERGY. Just *listen* to La Vie Boheme and tell me I'm wrong. Its about a group of young people who are trying to live their life to the fullest - watching the show is like getting kicked in the face - in the best way possible! There was really no way to translate that level of energy onto the film version [especially not with THAT director, but that's mostly a personal thing].

Also, the movie is not as personal. Seeing the show live is awesome because the characters are right there - and they break the fourth wall [meaning they notice the audience, a taboo in theatre]. They make eye contact with the audience members, I used to have a castmember who looked at me everytime he said a certain line and knew I was in the theatre. You can't get that same contact with a movie screen.

That said, the movie DID have almost all of the originals - and that's a HUGE plus in its favor. I don't think there's doubt in anyone's mind that Anthony Rapp, for example, IS Mark. There have been some great Marks on Broadway, but I think most Rent fans would agree that none of them reach Anthony's level [I once told Matt Caplan that he was the best Mark EVER... except Anthony Rapp - and even he understood!].

Anyway, I found the movie really disappointing. I didn't like 99% of the changes they made from the original and I just thought it was very mediocre - while the story itself is MUCH more than mediocre.

So, yeah, I definitely like the Broadway/stage version more. Definitely. :D

I saw it twice on Broadway and the 1st cast was amazing!!! The second cast was just ok but lightyears better than the movie. The movie was mediocre at best, a horrible adaptation!

I've never seen it on Broadway but I've seen 2 shows in Michigan at 2 differnt places. I love the musical cuz there is nothing like live music .. but I loved the movie cuz most of the original cast was involved and could give Jonathan Larsen a real tribute.. and anything that has Jesse L. Martin singing it .. has to be my favorite!

Broadway was much more enjoying. The movie made the story feel very dated and it was harder to feel too bad for the characters and their poor decision making.
