Its not a silly question. The Father of the Nation is generally who has contributed a lot to the birth of a Nation. He is the most revered and respected statesman and nobleman who has given his entire life for the birth of the Nation. For India he is Mohandas Karam Chand Gandhi (or Gandhiji as we all fondly know him). Likewise for other countries they all have such figures.
