About 6 trillion miles in distance. The answer to this question is readily available by typing in "light year" in any search engine

By using the word long it seems that you imply a measure of time, which of course the answer would be one year. A Light year is the distance that light travles in one year, roughly about six trillion miles, quite considerable. Bear in mind that it takes 8 minutes for light to reach us from the sun, so a light year is quite some distance!

1 light year = 9.4605284 × 10^15 meters

Thats whats the google calculator says and I would not disagree
Another way to measure it would be:
(3 x 10^8) x (60 x 60 x 24 x 365)
where the 1st part is the approx speed of light per second and the next part is the number of seconds in a year (with 365 days)
Thats a close enough approximation of the above figure

Speed of light is 300,000 kms a Second. The distance light travels in one year is One light year. The nearest star after the Sun is about 4 light years away. if u travel at the speed of light now..U will reach the the star ( Proxima Centauri) in 4 years time :)

One light year is 5,865,696,000,000 miles or 9.4605284 × 10 to the power of 15 meters or 9,460,800,000,000 kilometers.

It is the distance travelled by light in the period of one earth year.

365 days
now if you are asking how far can you go in a light year?
that is 365 days at the speed of light
speed of light: 299 792 458 m / s
365 days x 24hrs x 60 min x 60 sec x 299 792 458 m
5,908,909,347,180,000 miles

Knowing, as every schoolboy should, that there are 31,536,000 seconds in a year just multiply by the speed of light namely 186,000 miles per second in imperial measurement or 300,000 metres per second in metric.
