You don't HAVE to give blood. You donate blood if you want to. I don't give blood. I avoid needles as much as possible.

When you go to donate blood you will fill out a very detailed questionare. Based on your answers they will tell you if you are eligible to donate. The questionare does ask about travel to some specific countries.

Wait 12 months after travel in an area where malaria is found. Wait 3 years after living in a country where malaria is found. Persons who have spent long periods of time in countries where "mad cow disease" is found are not eligible to donate. This requirement is related to concerns about variant Creutzfeld Jacob Disease (vCJD). Learn more about vCJD and donation. Persons who were born in or who lived in certain countries in Western Africa, or who have had close contact with persons who were born in or who lived in certain West African countries are not eligible to donate. Any over seas travel prohibits donating of blood in this country for six months to a year.

Most places in the US won't accept donations until you have been back in the US for 3-6 months depending which organization you do to .

Yes for a period of time. I believe it is 6 months, but you would have to check with them. There is a questionnaire that you have to fill out before you can donate blood.

If you get sick there, yes it could.

I don't know of any blanket prohibition.
